Coelho wrote The Alchemist in two weeks, saying the story was "already written in [his] soul." After the publisher gave the rights back to Coelho after a year, he spent time in the Mojave desert to heal.
The Alchemist has been translated into 67 languages, making it the most translated book by a living author in the world.
The Alchemist has won several international awards, including the 2004 Nielsen Gold Book Award in the United Kingdom, the 1995 Grand Prix Litteraire Elle in France, and the 2002 Corine International Award for fiction in Germany.
